Growing up, I learned to cook a few of my mother's specialties, to bake good bread, and to follow a recipe well. When I moved out on my own, I realized that the few meals I knew how to prepare well were going to get really boring in a hurry. I became an experimental cook, collecting tips and recipes from friends and family, from magazines and cookbooks, and from the internet in all its text-based, dial-up adolescent glory.
In my mid-thirties, I lived in an anarchist collective and helped to organize a Food Not Bombs chapter in my hometown. Food Not Bombs is an activist organization that protests war and poverty by the sharing of free food with hungry people in hundreds of cities around the world. For ten months, I cooked a meal with food items reclaimed from the waste stream, and then took it to a local park and shared it with anyone who wanted to partake. This was a serious crash course in cooking with what I had on hand! One summer evening, I biked to the home of one of my lovers. He wasn't home, but I found a pot of black beans cooking on his stove. He hadn't really done anything to spice them up at all, and I decided to surprise him. I biked home again and returned with spices and vegetables, and spent half an hour creating a delicious soup. I left a note that said sommething like, Love, The Soup Fairy Since that night, my friends and family have continued to call me "The Soup Fairy" in honor of my habit of taking whatever's in the cupboard and creating delicious, nutritious, one-of-a-kind soups and meals. Now you can enjoy some of my favorite collected recipes in your own kitchen. Inside you'll find vegan, vegetarian, and meaty main dishes, side dishes, salads, breads, desserts, and much more. You'll find quick and easy recipes, artisan recipes, comfort foods, and hopefully some new-to-you foods. Enjoy! |
